We all want to be able to stay at home with our children, so we don’t miss a beat of their lives. However, we must work to ensure we provide them with the best life possible. So unfortunately, we cannot have it all. Or can we?
There are ways to work and stay at home. You probably think that’s too good to be true, right? Well, it’s actually not. I am fortune enough to be able to stay at home with my children, whilst working for a living, and you can, too.
Identify Your Talents
Now before you run out and quit your job, you need to identify your talents so you know what step to take next. Are you a people person? You could follow in my footsteps and become a customer service assistant who works from home. Businesses, both national and international, are crying out for employees who have what it takes to wow their customers and clients on the phone. More and more businesses are being created from home, so an offsite assistant might be just the thing they’re looking for.
Do you have a rare skill? Your talent might be just the thing a company is looking for. For example, construction companies up and down the UK are crying out for qualified engineers, and will hire freelance workers to ensure they can move on with their projects.
Create Your Own Business
So many mothers have realised the many benefits of working from home, and have gone on to set up their own business from the comfort of their own home. Do you have an eye for social media or search engine optimisation? You could form your own online marketing company. Are you a talented writer? You could provide a copywriting service to business all over the globe, and you could even meet up with other talented friends and loved ones to create a unique online service.
Maybe you’re a talented seamstress? You could create your own range of adult or children clothing that people will fall in love with. You could even attend cake decorating classes and then launch a new company creating exquisite, creative cakes to the public.
Anyone can create their own business, you just have to do your homework and use your imagination. Not only will this ensure that you can work in your own time, but you could provide a better life for your family. However, be informed of all the company set-up policies and regulations of your area. For instance, if you are operating in the European Union, data protection policies like GDPR are no exemption for small businesses. You can get in touch with a GDPR consultancy like Privacy Helper (use this link to see the website) to understand how compliance works. GDPR is just one example, and there might be other data protection laws in your region. So, to be on the safe side, do proper research before setting up your online business.
Home Employment Tips
If you are going to work from home, you need room to do it in. If you live in a small flat, you may need to squeeze a desk into your bedroom, but if you’re lucky enough to have your own garden, a backyard studio shed might be ideal for you. This will give you your own space away from the house, helping you to concentrate on your work instead of getting distracted by your unmade bed or that pile of laundry.
To work from home, you also need to become computer savvy. We live in a modern world that’s dominated by the internet, and it’s a wonderful medium to connect with customers, clients, and employers. This means you will need to have a high-speed internet connection. If you already don’t have one, you could either look here for internet providers or fall back on your local one. Also, take the time to learn about about industry software, social media trends, and the latest news. An hour a day when the kids are in bed is doable, and it won’t feel like a chore as it will be a project you feel passionate about. If you are working a lot from your computer you are going to need to take care of your eyes as over time they can become strained, it may be wise to look online at websites like Felix Gray to find the right ones for you, so you are not squinting at your screen and getting multiple headaches which will certainly take the joy out of working from home.
You will also need to create some office hours. Obviously, the reason you want to work from home is spending more time with your children, which means you’ll have to work once they’re in bed or taking naps. However, if you want your home employment role to be a success, you will have to stick to the schedule.
